Kirklees Council has welcomed Richard Smith into the team, as Strategic Creative Development Manager ahead of Kirklees Year of Music 2023 (KYOM 2023).
KYOM 2023, is a unique, place-based, cultural change programme. Through investment in the district’s diverse music talent, communities and businesses, the year-long programme of major events and durational initiatives, will strengthen the music ecology of Kirklees from its roots.
Richard will direct the work of the Creative Development Team, which sits in the Culture & Tourism service of Kirklees Council. Commenting on his new appointment Richard said: “KYOM 2023 is one of the major Creative Development Team projects in the coming year – as a team we work to understand the strengths and needs of Kirklees to support cultural production, to deliver events and creative development programmes for the benefit of the district. I’m happy to say my role will be helping to deliver across the whole KYOM 2023 programme.
“In the coming months I will help to define and support the delivery team and structure for KYOM 2023 – and I’m looking forward to continuing conversations with the many organisations and individuals in the district who will make the year so special. I’m thrilled that the Creative Development Team will be involved in every aspect of KYOM 2023; from the music industry and new talent development to memorable events and celebrating the many forms of music made in Kirklees.”
Richard has worked in the arts and culture sector for over 20 years, starting with museums and galleries before working for combined arts organisations to deliver venue and place-based programmes. His experience includes working for Lancaster Arts, National Museum Wales and The Harris Museum & Art Gallery on a variety of inspiring programmes and projects.
